Address
Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine, Turgut Özal Millet Cad., 34093 Fatih, Istanbul, Türkiye
The faculty’s Performance Laboratory test list includes CPET for maximal oxygen uptake and respiratory thresholds, with a lactate-threshold option. Ask the faculty about the current appointment route and testing location.
Start with the type of test you need, then choose a convenient district. Istanbul’s Atlas listings include sports-performance centres, university laboratories and sports-medicine departments. Access and protocols vary by facility.
European side
Explore Fulya / Beşiktaş, Maslak, Avcılar and Fatih. These listings include a sports-medicine centre and university facilities. Confirm which campus or department will host your appointment.
Asian side
Compare the cycling-focused location in Caddebostan / Kadıköy with the university performance laboratory in Pendik. Ask whether the available protocol matches your sport before planning the journey.
Appointments and language
University testing can require an individual arrangement or a research referral. Ask about public appointments, the language of the consultation and report, and the exact meeting point.
VO₂max is the highest rate at which your body can take up and use oxygen during intense exercise. It is commonly reported in ml/kg/min, or as an absolute value in litres per minute. A direct test measures breathing through a mask while workload increases.
For runners, cyclists and other endurance athletes, this gives a measured reference for aerobic capacity. It is one part of performance: thresholds, movement economy and the ability to sustain an effort also matter. A useful report connects the result to the protocol and your training goal.
Oxygen uptake during increasing exercise intensity.
Is oxygen directly measured? Which sport, device and protocol are used?
CPET / spiroergometry
A broader exercise assessment, typically including O₂, CO₂ and ventilation; clinical monitoring depends on the setting.
Does the appointment include ECG, ventilatory thresholds and a clinician’s interpretation if needed?
Lactate test
Blood lactate response across exercise stages. It does not directly measure oxygen uptake.
Is gas analysis included, or is this a standalone lactate-threshold assessment?
Watch estimate
An algorithm estimates VO₂max from recorded activity and other inputs.
Am I comparing an estimate with a direct measurement, and were the conditions comparable?
How the appointment works
Discuss your goal
Tell the centre your sport, training background and reason for testing. Ask about screening and preparation instructions.
Fit and calibrate
The practitioner sets up the analyser and mask, checks the fit and records the signals included in your appointment.
Increase the workload
You exercise through a graded protocol on the agreed equipment, followed by recovery. Test duration and stopping criteria depend on the protocol and participant.
Review the result
Ask for the measured VO₂max or VO₂peak, protocol, heart-rate and workload data, and any thresholds that the test can reliably identify.
Before you choose a centre
Confirm direct gas analysis and the exact test package.
Ask for a running- or cycling-specific protocol that fits your goal.
Check whether the price includes the report, thresholds, consultation and any lactate measurements.
Confirm language, appointment duration, address and preparation instructions with the centre.
Choose a VO2max protocol for your sport
The exercise mode changes both the result and what it means. For repeat testing, use the same equipment and a comparable protocol whenever possible.
Running
A treadmill test measures oxygen uptake while running. If race preparation is your goal, ask whether the report also includes threshold speeds and how the protocol relates to your usual pace.
Cycling
A cycle ergometer controls workload in watts. Threshold power and efficiency can add useful context to VO2max; compare the result with cycling-specific references.
Rowing
Some laboratories can test on a rowing ergometer. Power, technique and rowing specificity matter, so treadmill and cycling values should not be treated as interchangeable.
HYROX
Aerobic capacity can be tested separately from sleds and workout stations. Ask whether a treadmill protocol suits your goal; a race simulation is a different assessment, not automatically a VO2max test.
These are protocol options, not services guaranteed at every Istanbul centre. Confirm the available ergometer and report before booking.
How to prepare for a VO2max test
The laboratory’s own instructions take priority. General preparation helps make the test safer and repeat results more comparable.
Training
Arrive rested. Avoid strenuous exercise on the test day and ask whether the centre wants a longer recovery period.
Food and hydration
Avoid a large meal shortly before the appointment and maintain normal hydration. Confirm the required meal timing with the centre.
Caffeine, alcohol and smoking
Follow the centre’s timing instructions. These restrictions vary with the protocol and the reason for testing.
Clothing and medication
Bring suitable exercise clothes, shoes and a medication list. Never stop prescribed medication unless the responsible clinician tells you to.
If you are ill, have new symptoms or feel unwell, contact the centre before travelling; the appointment may need to be rescheduled.
How to interpret a VO2max result
Compare like with like: age, sex, body-mass scaling, exercise mode and protocol all affect interpretation. Population reference values describe a particular sample; they are not universal health cut-offs or a diagnosis.
For trained and elite athletes
A high VO2max is only one part of performance. Thresholds, movement economy and the ability to sustain race-specific work also matter. Your own trend from comparable tests is often more useful than a single label such as “good” or “elite”.
Mera
What comes after your test?
Explore Mera’s interactive demo to see how test reports, longitudinal history and Mera AI can work together. Interpretation is grounded in athlete data; decisions remain with the specialist.
Use the map and facility list on this page to compare Istanbul locations tagged for VO₂max / CPET in Mera Atlas. Options include sports-performance centres and university laboratories on both sides of the city. Contact the chosen centre to confirm the specific test and current access.
How much does a VO2max test cost in Istanbul?
Ask the centre for a current quote. Prices depend on the protocol, the specialist’s involvement and whether lactate, ECG, interpretation or a follow-up consultation are included. A dated price list is not a guarantee of the current price.
Is a laboratory VO₂max test the same as my watch’s estimate?
No. A direct test measures oxygen uptake during exercise. A watch estimates it from activity and other data. The two can be useful for different purposes; compare repeated measurements using a consistent method and similar conditions.
Do I need to be an elite athlete?
No. Testing can also be relevant for recreational athletes who want a baseline or a clearer training plan. Tell the provider about your fitness and health history so they can decide whether the test and protocol are appropriate.
How should I prepare for the test?
Follow the testing centre’s instructions on exercise, meals, caffeine and clothing. Tell them about medication and relevant health conditions. Do not change prescribed medication without instructions from the responsible clinician.
Can I book in English, Turkish or Russian?
This guide is available in all three languages. That does not establish which languages each laboratory supports. Ask the centre about the consultation and report language before booking.

Mera Atlas editorial team
Mera Atlas is a directory of testing facilities. Entries combine public facility information with existing Atlas records; partner locations are labelled. A listing describes testing capability, not guaranteed appointment availability. Contact each provider for current access, equipment, pricing and the exact location.
